Charity WorkIn early January 2008 we saw an appeal by a local charity on the BBC Look North news programme.
The charity was The Jacob's Well Appeal who are based in Beverley in East Yorkshire. The Jacob's Well Appeal is an ecumenical Christian registered charity supplying humanitarian aid to Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. The charity is run by Drs. Beryl and Peter Beynon. The Jacob's Well Appeal had recently been on a humanitarian aid trip to Ghana. During this trip they saw football-mad youngsters playing football with empty water cartons and using sticks for goal posts. So on their return to England they made an appeal for any unwanted football kits and footballs which they could send back out Ghana in February 2008.
We decided this was something we could definitely help with. So we bought them 2 5-a-side football kits complete with blank shirts, shorts and socks, a football, 2 sets of goal keeping gloves and a set of football cones. We asked Beryl if there was a specific village they would be going to and she said they were going to a village called Lawra. So we then set about designing 2 football team logos, one called Lawra United and the other called Lawra Allstars. The red kit became Lawra United and the blue kit became Lawra Allstars, We printed the logos and both company web addreses onto the 2 team strips and the whole lot is currently on its way to Ghana!
We hope to have a picture later in the year of our kits with the youngsters in the village of Lawra in Ghana.
Keep up the good work Beryl and Peter and all the volunteers at The Jacob's Well Appeal.
